Unforgettable hiking day in the Chulilla canyon

    Author: Samu Vuohelainen

The next morning, we woke up refreshed and enjoyed a leisurely breakfast before heading towards the magnificent Chulilla canyon. We had researched the area beforehand and knew that an impressive hiking trail ran through the canyon. The trail started right near our car, across the road.

As we approached the canyon, we noticed a small stall selling snacks and drinks for the hike. At the same time, we bought one-euro admission tickets to the area. Soon after arriving at the edge of the canyon, we saw a lovely turquoise lake below, with a lone pier floating in the middle.

Suspension Bridges and the Canyon Floor

We continued along the canyon rim, enjoying the scenery and the birdsong. Several motorhomes were visible along the route, and some had camped in the most stunning spots in the area. The path initially ran high along the canyon rim and then gradually began to descend. When we reached the first suspension bridge, Jessika was nervous about crossing it, but with a little encouragement, she dared to cross the bridge.

The path continued downwards until we reached the riverside. On the canyon floor, the vegetation was lush, and the atmosphere was enchanting. The trail continued along the river, crossing it several times via suspension bridges. We saw many climbers along the way.

There was also an information board along the route that told the history of the area. In ancient times, logs were floated down this river to Valencia. Before the river was dammed, the water volume was much greater, and the men guiding the logs did dangerous work amidst strong currents.

The hike ended at a large dam, which unfortunately was undergoing renovation. So, we couldn't walk on it to admire the views. We turned back and returned along the same route to our car.

The Village and Castillo de Chulilla

The three-hour hike was just the right length, leaving us plenty of time for the day. After returning to our car, we washed up and spent some quiet time reading and enjoying the scenery. We decided to head to the village for a meal.

The walk to the village of Chulilla took about 10 minutes. The village exuded an authentic Spanish atmosphere with its narrow alleys and traditional buildings. We enjoyed delicious Spanish food at a restaurant in the central square for an affordable price. After eating, we headed to a nearby hill where the exciting ruins of Castillo de Chulilla are located.

A well-maintained asphalt road led to the castle, and access to the area was free. The place was surprisingly quiet – without tourist groups or stalls, which are often found in similar places, the atmosphere was peaceful and authentic. From the ruins, there was a magnificent view down into the valley.

As evening fell, we headed back to our motorhome, stopping at a local shop along the way. The small, charming shop was full of fresh, locally produced food.

The day ended with a spectacular sunset, which we admired while listening to the sounds of nature. Chulilla left an unforgettable impression on us – we need to find more places like this.
